Tweek 10.0

During a year of global lockdowns and social distancing,
Twilio used its tools to facilitate communications.
Echoing that at home, I used materials available to me to create tools for
communication as I commemorated Twilio’s Decennial hackathon.

Context

Without access to the tools I normally had in the office while I was sheltering in place, I looked towards what I had at home and played into Twilio’s maritime as I themed Twilio’s Decennial hackathon.

I made a series naval signaling flags out of existing Twilio t-shirts that the hackathon participants will recognize.

Process

From the inception of the concept of this project, I worked closely with the photography team as I knew I would need their help capturing the flags I had made.

I felt that the flags on their own wouldn’t be enough to create visual interest so I decided to include the model ship and a message in a bottle.

Creating lots of sketches I was able to work out the composition and layout of the posters.

Posters

Two posters were created for the hackathon in the same style, spelling out AHOY and HACK using signaling flags.

I included a model ship as a nod to shipping code, and a message in a bottle which is just a very old, single instance, un-targeting email ad.

Semaphores

A semaphore is a variable or abstract data type used to control access to a common resource by multiple processes, and avoid critical section problems in a concurrent system such as a multitasking operating system.

Or in this case, a system of visual signals performed by a pair of flags. I created a key to illustrate how to perform these signals for anyone who’s interested in giving it a go.
